Rum is an amazingly versatile liquor that can be added to many different flavors to turn something a little sweeter and a lot more alcoholic without overpowering the drink. It is made from sugar cane and was developed in the Caribbean. It is available in a clear or silver version that is a very young rum or un-aged and there is also a gold version that is aged for a little longer. It is the light or silver version that most use when they are mixing it with cocktails. The gold rum is reserved for drinking on its own or over the rocks, just like one would do with a good Scotch.
One of the most famous cocktails with rum is the daiquiri. Just about any flavor that you want can be made into a daiquiri, so whether you want strawberry, banana, mango or some other Caribbean (or non-Caribbean) flavor, you can apply it to one of these snazzy cocktails. To make it, you'll need a blender that's filled with ice. From there, you'll add cut up pieces of the fruit of your choice (though you can find a puree, too). Add a shot (or two) of light rum and then a few ounces of simple syrup. Blend until it's the consistency of a smoothie and serve. Umbrellas and straws can be added at your discretion.
The Cuba Libra is also an infamous cocktail with rum and sounds fancier than it really is. It's Coca Cola in a glass with ice, a shot of light rum and a little lime juice. You can garnish it with a lime wedge, too.
You can also make pina coladas with rum as well as a slew of other drinks, so experimenting can be up to you.
Just as the popularity of flavored vodkas has taken over the world of liquor, the same can be said about flavored rums. There is no reason to enjoy just a plain, light rum anymore when there are so many other flavors that are infused with fruits and such to enhance an array of different cocktails more than just a standard one would be able to do. These flavors include:
Many of these flavored rums are available in your local liquor store in the rum section. They are made by many different brands. Should you find yourself in the Caribbean, you can also find even more flavors of rums, but are not always exported for the rest of the world to enjoy. If you find that your local liquor store only has one or two flavors and you want to explore what other flavors are available, you can consider going online to a liquor store over the internet. These places often offer a very large variety of liquors, including flavored rums so that you can explore new cocktails, make some of your own concoctions and impress friends with your newfound collection of flavors that you cannot find everywhere.
