Disaronno Originale (Amaretto Disaronno) A brand producing a special kind of amaretto, which is described as a sweet, almond-flavored Italian beverage made from the leftover apricot and almond pits from producing wine. However, unlike other brands of amaretto, Disaronno Originale does not contain any almond.

Dating back to 1525

The original brand name was “Amaretto di Saronno Originale”, which means Original Amaretto from Saronno, it later changed name to “Amaretto Disaronno”, which transformed the origin of the name to a distinctive brand name, today it has changed name yet again to “Disaronno Originale”. Disaronno Originale claims that they have the original, secret recipe to make amaretto dating back to 1525 and the production still remains in Saronno while the product has spread worldwide. The city of Saronnno is a north-Italian town close to Venice, it is a comune of Lombardy in the province of Varese and in 1960 it received the title of city with a presidential decree. The product is described as an infusion of apricot kernel oil, alcohol, burnt sugar and the essence of seventeen different herbs and fruits and the alcohol by volume level is 28%. The different ways to drink Disaronno Originale varies between on the rocks, in shots, or as a mixer in coke or apple juice.

Bottles designed on the island of Murano

Disaronno Originale has an amber color and is sold in special rectangular bottles designed by a craftsman on the island known as Murano in the Venetian Lagoon in northern Italy, the town is classed as a localita of the comune of Venice. The company claims the so called Luini legend, a legend that says that when the famous artist Leonardo da Vinci and his student Bernardo Luini went to depict the Madonna in Saronno, Luini met a young woman who became his lover who later gave him amaretto as a gift of gratitude before he left.
