What is Bombay Sapphire Gin?

They will often buy the bottle because of how it looks despite the higher price tag and whether or not they even know if they like gin.

Distributed by Bacardi, Bombay Sapphire Gin was released in 1987 in the flat-sided, sapphire bottle that you see on the shelves today. The name of this gin refers to the origin of the popularity of gin as a spirit in India during the time of the British Raj. Bombay Sapphire Gin is named after the actual Star of Bombay sapphire that is located in the Smithsonian.

Unique flavor

 

The unique flavor of Bombay Sapphire is created using a mixture of 10 unique botanicals that include almond, licorice, juniper berries, coriander, and grains of paradise among others. Using a carterhead still, the spirit is triple distilled and the vapors go through a mesh container that holds those ten botanicals to get the flavor and aroma. You will find that Bombay Sapphire is lighter and more floral than other types of gin that are made using a copper still. Special water from Lake Vyrnwy is specially added to result in the gin being at a level of 40% alcohol.

 

Many people prefer the taste of Bombay Sapphire while others find the juniper taste to be too strong and make it difficult or not as smooth to drink. A martini made with this spirit is generally not made using vermouth as it will have a strong first bite when you drink it. Some will say that the juniper taste in Bombay is the same as in others, but they find it too strong because of the higher alcohol content.

 

Generally gin will be somewhere between 84 and 90 proof, and Bombay Sapphire Gin is 94 proof. If you like to drink martinis that are on the more dry side, you need to use Bombay carefully when making your drink with this spirit. Since the gin is stronger than most other brands it will cause your drink to also be stronger and you may not be able to drink as many martinis as you normally can.
