Sweet cream is a delicious way to enhance many different cocktails to either a frozen drink or by adding a dessert flair to it. Sweet cream usually consists of heavy cream and sugar, though you can also use ice-cream or melted ice-cream depending on what you have available and what you are trying to make. Various recipes exist using this cream, though if you are creative and have a full bar, the sky is the limit with what you can concoct using this very rich ingredient.
Adding sweet cream can be as easy as just pouring it into a glass on the rocks with a shot or two of alcohol or something much more complex than that. You can use various liquors based upon your preferences, though vodka tends to be mixed with it the best.
One such drink is the White Russian. It is just like the Black Russian, using vodka and coffee liqueur, however the addition of the sweet cream is what turns it into the "White" version of the drink. It is served on the rocks in an old fashioned glass so that it is ice cold.
If you have a blender, then you can really start making some great drinks. If you've always been fond of the pina colada but don't like the coconut flavor (or can't find coconut milk), you can substitute sweet cream and still get a very tasty drink. Fill the blender pitcher with ice. Add a few shots of light rum, some chunks of pineapple and then the sweet cream. Blend it until it's the consistency of a milkshake and pour it into a glass.
Crème de cocoa, crème de menthe, chocolate syrup, vanilla vodka and various other ingredients, when blended with sweet cream can make for very delectable alcoholic drinks that you can enjoy on a hot summer day or to end any day perfectly.
You can buy sweet cream in most grocery stores. Head to the dairy section and it should be right beside your milk. Heavy cream is what you should be looking for, then you can add a little sugar. If this is too much work, go into the freezer section and buy some vanilla ice-cream. When you get home, put it in the refrigerator instead of the freezer (put it in a resealable bag first) so that it will be a soft consistency when you are ready to work with it.
If you want something a little less sweet, you can just use heavy cream or even whole (or skim) milk if you don't want something quite as rich. If you or someone you are making a drink for has dairy allergies, you have options for replacing the sweet cream, too. Those include soy milk as well as almond milk. It will change up the taste a little bit, however with a pinch of sugar and enough alcohol, no one will ever know the difference and you can make great cocktails that everyone can enjoy.
