White Wine - Drink Secrets

White Wine

When many people think of ingredients for cocktails, they think about vodka, gin, tequila, and even rum but certainly not white wine. It is a very popular ingredient in cocktails however. This is because it is readily available in most homes and does not have the high alcohol content that other liquors have. There are many kinds of white wine to use and it will offer many different flavor profiles when combined with the right ingredients. The result is a very refreshing drink that won't get you too tipsy.

What Kind of White Wine to Use

There are many varieties of white wine that you can use in a cocktail. Many people simply use what's around the house, though Chablis or Chardonnay is typically the most common. Because you are mixing it with other ingredients, you don't need to spend a lot of money to have a top of the line wine for your cocktail.

There are many "local" vineyards that you may want to check out for their additional flavors of white wine. There are vineyards in Florida that make strawberry Riesling, Tangerine Zinfandel and many other white wines where fruit is mixed in. These can be found by looking online. The benefit to using wines like these in the cocktails is the addition of an extra flavor without having to add fruit juice or a sugary syrup to get it.

What Cocktails to Make with White Wine

There are many cocktails that use white wine and it only takes a bartender that's willing to experiment to come up with a few more. If you have a full bar at home (or even a few things) and a bottle of wine, the sky is the limit for your creativity with it. If you are looking for something that is more tried and true, you can try:

  • Spritzer
  • Wine Cooler
  • Punch

The first and the easiest to make is a wine spritzer. Two parts of white wine are combined with one part of club soda and served. The more flavorful the wine (think about fruity white wines) the tastier your spritzer will be.

The next is a wine cooler, just like you used to enjoy in the '80s. This involves adding 4 ounces of wine to 4 ounces of lemon lime soda. You will then add a shot each of lemon, lime, pineapple and grapefruit juice. You can add or substitute some of the juices for a different taste each time. Some of the other juices you can add include grape and cranberry juice.

Another great drink to make with white wine, especially for parties is a punch. In a large punch bowl, add equal parts champagne, white wine and red wine. You will then add a lot of ice cubes. From there, you will add lime juice and strawberries. You can either simmer the strawberries and lime juice to create a thick syrup or add them in fresh.

Any way you choose, this wine can make it into cocktails for a unique and refreshing drink anytime you choose.
