Tangerine Juice - Drink Secrets

Tangerine Juice

Tangerine Juice

This variety of the mandarin orange family, the tangerine is much smaller than oranges but has a much thinner peel. Tangerines are generally very sweet and many times associated with the fall and winter holidays since its peak season runs from October through early April. It was also one of the items many children during the late 1800’s and the early 1900’s found in their stockings at Christmas. This is very different from today stockings filled with toys.

The tangerine juice is mostly available in the United States since it is basically grown in and around the Northern Hemisphere. The juice is processed and frozen to ship overseas. Many recipes from breads to deserts to some cocktails use the tangerine juice as one of the main ingredients.

One of the recipes is called a Tangerine Pound Cake which calls for unsalted butter, fine granulated sugar, tangerine juice, some of the tangerine peel and all purpose flour. This pound cake makes a cake that is very similar to the English scones.

If it’s a cocktail recipe you are looking for, there are quite a few drinks around requiring tangerine juice. The drink is called Captain Crisp and is a very tropical type of cocktail consisting of Captain Morgan Original spiced rum, Parrot Bay coconut rum, the children’s Juicy Juice orange tangerine juice and Fresca grapefruit soda. Once you mix all the ingredients together you can serve over a couple of ice cubes for a refreshing summer time drink.

Now there’s another mixed drink that doesn’t sound as invigorating as the Captain Crisp but probably would be a good cocktail to try! It’s called the BioHazard and contains Bacardi 151 rum, tangerine juice, apricot nectar and honey liqueur. Stir gently (maybe that why they call it BioHazard?) and enjoy over ice.
