Egg White - Drink Secrets

Egg White

Mixing it Up with Egg White Cocktails

Cocktails are constantly evolving and so is what people are putting into them. Egg whites are not a very common thing to put in a cocktail; however you can certainly make it one by introducing it into your social circle. People always want to try something different, so this is your chance to give it to them. You may be surprised to learn that there are a few cocktails you can make with it.

Why Egg Whites Are Used

The egg white is probably the least desirable part of the egg when you look at it. It's clear, gelatinous and very slimy. But it can also be very tasty. When utilized right, it can make your drinks look absolutely wonderful. Shaken or whisked they add a lot of texture and volume. Just look what it does to meringue and soufflés. Fluffy, light and delicious.

How Raw Egg Whites Are Safe

Many people think that if you're putting the egg whites in a blender or whisking them, they are automatically safe. While this is not the case, you can still consume raw egg as long as it has been pasteurized. One of the best ways to utilize them is to purchase Egg Beaters or another product that has already separated the yolk and given you white only.

You've eaten raw egg before and probably never even realized it.

  • Meringue
  • Caesar dressing
  • Cookie dough

See? You're still alive and kicking, so tossing it in a drink is fine, too.

Recipes Using an Egg White

Now that you know why you use an egg white and that it's safe to consume, it's time to put it into practice. There's the Ramos Gin Fizz that you can make. You combine two shots of gin, 1 ounce of cream, an egg, and a half ounce each of simple syrup, lime juice and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously for five whole minutes. Seriously – it requires a LOT of shaking. Strain it into a glass and then splash seltzer on top. The straw should be able to stand up straight inside of the mixture. If not, you didn't shake it long enough.

You can also make a Clover Club. Fill up a shaker with a shot of gin and the white of one egg. Then add a half ounce each of lemon juice, dry vermouth, and raspberry syrup. Shake until your arm is about to gall off, strain into a glass and serve it up.

Concerns with Using Egg Whites

You may want to tell your friends that you are planning on putting an egg white in their drink. This is for a couple of reasons. The first is that they might have an allergy to eggs and the last thing you want to do is have to chase your friend down with an epi-pen in the middle of a party. The other is based on being vegetarian or vegan. Most vegetarians aren't going to be too okay with a cocktail with an egg in it, even though it makes it taste better.
