Caramel topping, or caramel sauce, is enjoyed on a variety of desserts today. Caramel apples, sundaes, pies and cakes are just a few of the tasty treats you can get with caramel on top. More and more people loved the taste of the sauce so they wanted to be able to make it at home for their own desserts and treats. Make sure you have the following ingredients to be able to make your homemade caramel sauce.

  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • A medium sized sauce pan
  • A small sauce pan
  • 1 can of condensed milk, preferably sweetened
  • 2 ½ cups of brown sugar
  • ¾ cup of whole milk
  • ½ cup of butter

First add the sweetened condensed milk and the sugar together in the medium saucepan and heat on medium until the sugar has completely dissolved. Then you wan to put the butter into the smaller saucepan to completely melt it over the heat. Once the butter begins to melt add in the milk and the vanilla extract. Leave this mix to simmer on low for a couple of minutes. It should be very smooth once it is done.

You then want to slowly combine your two mixes. Pour the butter and milk mix into your larger saucepan of the brown sugar mix and stir completely. You want to leave the new mixture standing for about 5 minutes, or until the sauce becomes thick. Then just put the caramel topping into a bowl or pan and cover it up until you plan to use it! It really is an excellent topping choice for many desserts so why not make your own sauce to add the extra homemade touch.
