A Brief History of Canadian Whisky

There are four countries today that are major producers of whiskey, but of those four, Canada is not really the first one that comes to mind for many people. When you first think of whiskey, Irish whiskey is what comes to many minds. Canadian whisky certainly does not have the history, flavors, or full bodied richness that the whiskeys of Ireland, Scotland, and America have. Many people who consider themselves whiskey enthusiasts will not take notice of the blended Canadian whiskeys that are present today. Canadian whisky played a big role during the prohibition era in America, which helped many Canadian whiskeys gain popularity.

 

What many people do not know is that Crown Royal, Canadian Club Reserve, and Wiser’s Deluxe are all Canadian whiskys that are very popular and taste very good. The taste of Canadian whiskey is less harsh than that of others and so it is often drank by people who are just starting into drinking whiskeys. Many whisky drinkers like to drink Canadian whisky mixed with soda or a citrus soda.

 

If you order a rye whisky at a bar, you may often find that you are given a Canadian whisky. All Canadian whiskeys are made in the same style with a blend of rye and other whiskeys that are considered to be neutral. You may taste some of the spiciness that you expect from a rye whiskey in a Canadian whisky, but it will be lightened by the blending spirit that was used in creating it.

 

The smoothness and full flavor that you will see in a Canadian whisky is because of the fact that they use a rye that has been malted in the creation process. You will also find a slight taste of vanilla in the flavor of Canadian whiskey because of the fact that it is aged in oak barrels that were most likely used for aging the American bourbons.
