Campari Bitters - How to Make a Negroni Cocktail


The term bitters is used to refer to a spirit that is flavored with herbs or roots that are bitter. These types of spirits were originally created to be used for medicinal purposes. Many bitters liquor are still considered today to help with various ailments, but they are generally drunk as an aperitif or digestif along with food. Bitters liquors, such as campari bitters are enjoyed by many people on its own over ice or as an ingredient in many different cocktails.

What Is Campari Bitters

 

Campari is bright red in color, and gets its flavor from the peel of the Seville orange. It was originally made from cochineal insects that were crushed. You will mostly find it mixed with soda water as a drink, but campari bitters are also added as an ingredient to a variety of cocktails. Campari bitters are also thought to be excellent at settling an upset stomach, or helping cure a hangover.

 

The recipe for Campari bitters has not changed from its original recipe that was first made in 1861 in Novara, Italy by Gaspare Campari. The only thing that has changed in the production of this popular spirit is the location of where it is made. In 2005 the company moved to updated production facilities in Novi Ligure, Italy.

Campari Bitters In Cocktails

 

The Negroni is a classic, and popular, cocktail that is made using Campari. It is generally served as a pre-dinner, or aperitif, drink. The term aperitif is used to refer to items that will stimulate your appetite. To make a Negroni you will need one ounce of Campari bitters, one ounce of Gin, one ounce of Italian sweet vermouth, and an orange peel for a garnish. Put all of the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice, and shake well. Strain the mixture into a chilled martini glass, and then garnish the glass with the orange peel. Drink and enjoy this classic cocktail!
