Bushmills Irish Whiskey - Drink Secrets

Bushmills Irish Whiskey

Enjoying Bushmills

Bushmills is an Irish whiskey that comes from a distillery in Northern Ireland. It is very common throughout bars around the world to either be drunk straight or in various cocktails. Irish whiskey is regulated by the Irish Whiskey Act of Ireland and this particular brand is considered to be the oldest licensed distillery in the world.

What Bushmills Is

The Irish whiskey of Bushmills has been around since about 1608 when a license to distill was granted to Sir Thomas Phillipps by King James I. The whiskey is distilled in Northern Ireland in the Bushmills distillery. It is distilled three times and then is aged for a minimum of three years in wooden casks.

All are a malt whiskey, however there are a few variations based upon how long it has aged and whether multiple malts are used.

Where to Buy Bushmills

You can buy Bushmills virtually anywhere that whiskey is sold. This includes:

  • Restaurants
  • Liquor stores
  • Online

Restaurants almost always have Irish whiskey behind the counter of the bar and Bushmills is one of the most common brands seen. It is both affordable and a name that many can trust when they are drinking whiskey.

Liquor stores will also carry the brand. It will be found with all of the other whiskeys and scotches from around the world, so you just need to find the trusted label to know that you've got quality. If there aren't any liquor stores near you, it will be easy to get at any liquor store online. You may want to shop around for the best price this way as shipping and handling can be costly if you are shipping from across the country.

How to Drink Bushmills

There are a few ways to drink Bushmills depending upon how strong you like it. The first and most common way is straight with just a little ice in the glass. If you aren't interested in it straight, there are various cocktails that are famous for having Irish whiskey in them.

The first is the Kerry Cooler, named after Kerry, Ireland. You will fill a tall glass with ice. Then add a shot of Bushmills and a shot of sherry. Then add an ounce each of orgeat syrup, lemon juice and club soda. You can serve it over ice or shake it with ice and strain it.

The next is the Leprechaun. It is a very simple drink that lets you enjoy the flavors of Bushmills without overcomplicating the cocktail. Fill a rocks glass with ice and then add the Irish whiskey. Top it off with tonic and then add a twist of lemon.

Finally, no list of cocktails is complete without the Nutty Irishman. Start with a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Add a half ounce each of Irish whiskey and Frangelico. Then add two ounces of cream. Shake about twenty times and then strain the cocktail into a glass.

There is no wrong way to enjoy Bushmills as long as it tastes good. Experiment and try it with different liqueurs to find one that you like the best.
